Default Pricing help

Hi guys,

After many years of being without my trusty GZ20 that Andy z20 now owns I'm looking at another one that I came by thru my brother and I need the help of you guys.

My brother spotted a GZ20 parked down the side of a house here in Perth, well down south in Rockingham. So we went to investigate. Knocked on the front door and an old lady answered who said it's her sons car but he's just storing it there as he has a family now.

Had a look over it and it's had a hard time sitting there.

Looking at the grill it looks like an '87 as it's got the honeycomb grill.
No factory body kit and no fog light front bar.
Massive front mount and the front bar has been cut to accomodate it.
Factory sunroof.
Brown interior with a cracked dash.
Automatic.
None of the glass is cracked.
Stock 15" mesh rims.
Back end is stitting on it ass. Had a look under it and it's not airbag so either the rear shocks are blown or the springs are sagging really badly.
Rust in the C pillars and above the front windscreen.

Rang the guy and he confirmed that it has the 1G-GTE in it still but the original turbos died. He reckons at the time he couldn't find any replacements so he got a single turbo manifold and fitted a turbo from a R33 Skyline.

Not sure what exhaust it has or the condition of the boot interior or under the bonnet as he's got the keys. He said he'll show me inside but because he lives in Perth (an hour away) he has to organise a time to get down there.

I asked him what he would sell it to me for but he didn't know. He wanted to do some research and find out the market value of it. It's not worth market value in the condition it's in. Plus it's unlicenced aswell and he did say the last time he drove it was back from the pits who didn't pass it but gave him a big list of stuff to fix. I can't see the list untill I see him.

My question is, what's it worth? I sold my GZ for $3500 unlicenced 6 years ago with the 1JZ in it. I was thinking way under $1000.

- Chris.

Oh, the lady said it's been sitting there for 2 years, but he had moved it a few times around the yard.

Just work on whatever price he's asking no point you offering him $200 if he has something like $2000 in mind.

A z20 in that condition? Id be pressed to look elsewhere. Be worth your while buying one interstate in better condition then over paying for something that needs that much work. Yes downwards of 1k is what I'll pay but sometimes sentimental value gets a ridiculous mark up too.

I agree about buying one in better condition, Not much point buying a car with rust like that unless you have plans to actually fix the rust up, do a full restoration, paint, get new interior parts for it, Tidy up the Engine bay. These cars changes hands too often and once they are ruined it can be hard to fix.

What is it that wants to make you buy the car? Is it because you think you will get a cheap car or a steal, or are you looking to buy one for parts?

If you want to see sentimental value markup at its best, try shopping for a VL Turbo.

Yea I know, my old one was sold at least 6 times after I let it go.
My brother spotted it, knew I really wanted another Z20 so let me know about it. Not looking for parts as I don't have one at the moment.
It would be a project, I don't have big pockets like in my single days. I was actually hoping it was engineless as I would have like to do a 1UZ conversion.

If I had the money to buy one interstate and pay the freight back here I would offer Andy bulk stupid money to get my old one back.

I remember your old one one..... was this the one where somebody cut out a Hole in the Chassis to Access the fuel pump?
That car had Automatic Shifting Issues I remember.

You might be better of paying a bit more and buying something like a Clean MZ20 I reckon

Yea, to change the pump to a Bosch unit rather than drop the fuel tank. Over $100 in Enzed fittings to replace a broken coupling on one of the fuel lines.
When I sold it, it had a MV Automatics shift kit in it. Shifts were extremely quick but very rough but if you floored it hard it would chirp the rear tyres thru the first 3 gears. I did read that one owner ended up killing the box and they replaced it with another but never took the shift kit out. I'm pretty sure the kit was $500 back then.

Haven't really got the coin to get something clean yet, married life you know There's a MZ20 on gumtree for $3500, don't have the coin for that one. But that boat anchor of a 7M would be chucked. My brother gave me a 500hp built 7M with spun big ends. Stripped it and parted it out, took over 6 months to get rid of all the parts as no one was interested in that engine.

They seem to have replaced it with a 1g-gte box and wired it up incorrectly, when I drove it, it didn't feel like it had a shift kit at all that must have come out too.

You'll Spend more money and time fixing a bad Soarer up sometimes a couple of thousand dollars makes all the difference to get a nice one.

Sounds like a total piece of shit man (the old lady one). You'd be way better off saving for a better one or a clean shell. I know what it's like wanting a type of car so bad you'll look at anything, but don't doooooooo itttttttt
